Now That’s Dedication

Posted in Christianity at 6:56 pm by Staci Hart Mauney

“Guard my life, for I am devoted to you. You are my God; save your servant who trusts in you.” (Psalm 86:2)

Gathering up his hockey gear, my brother loaded his car and prepared to drive to Oklahoma City to coach the youth hockey team that evening after he got home from work. He was a teacher and coach in a public school during the day, but several evenings each week, he volunteered to coach a league of junior high school athletes who needed guidance and leadership. He drove two hours one way in order to coach these athletes and make sure they received the instruction in hockey that they needed. Because of the athletes’ hard work and my brother’s dedication to his team, the team rallied to win the championship the first year he coached them.

When we devote ourselves to something, the results show clearly. In my brother’s case, he could have chosen to stay home in the evenings, but his desire to see young athletes learn to work as a team and develop character traits such as loyalty and good sportsmanship outweighed his desire to relax and watch TV. However, this dedication had a cost: time spent away from his wife, loss of sleep resulting from the long drive, and the financial cost of the commute as well.

In the same way, when God asks us to offer our time or our talents for him, we often find ourselves too busy or the cost too great to give these things to him. He provides opportunities each day to do the work. All he asks is that we honor him with obedience and answer the call. Even though we may have to give up something to do this, such as time spent playing video games or reading, we will find that the reward for our obedience is far greater than what we have given up.
