Joy of Autumn

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…” (Ecc. 3:1)

Each year, I dread the impending cold days of winter, but I always cherish the beauty found in the season just before – autumn. Now that the hottest Oklahoma summer on record is behind us, we can enjoy the crisp, cool days of fall. The air just feels different as the seasons transition from one to the next. Colors are brighter as the leaves begin to turn from green to yellow to orange to gold to red, and the skyline is arrayed in a canopy of majestic beauty that only God could have created. Read the Instructions

“I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.” (Psalm 119:16)

A few tall, resilient weeds had grown up in my yard in spite of the drought we‘re experiencing, so I decided to mow them down. I wanted to avoid the patches where the dry, brittle grass had worn down to dirt. I hauled the push mower out of the shed and pulled the cord to try to start it. When it didn’t start, I adjusted the throttle, but it still didn’t start. Hmm…I thought. I wonder what’s wrong with this thing. So I called my dad to tell him that I couldn’t get the mower started again, and when he got out of his truck, he said, “Did you read the instructions?” I just looked at him for a moment. “No,” I said, laughing. We walked over to the mower, and he pointed to the instructions on the side of the engine, where it’s clearly written in large letters, “Push button 3 times to start.” Read the rest of this entry »
