Thanksgiving Memories

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. (Psalm 100:4-5)

As a child, my family would load up in the car and either drive across town to my grandparents’ house for Thanksgiving or drive se veral miles out into the country to eat with my one of my dad’s siblings. No matter which side of the family we gathered with, my brother and I always had plenty of cousins to play with, and my parents had lots of adults with which to play games and visit. As we got older, my brother and I were invited to play games, too, although my brother usually watched football with the boys. Occasionally, my brother would take time out from the ball game to start a round of his favorite game, Clue, with anyone he could convince to play. My grandma especially loved to play with him, and when we went to my dad’s sister’s house, we often played Scrabble and Rummikub. My dad and uncle weren’t interested in board games, so they played pool instead. After Halloween, we often scramble to squeeze in time for Thanksgiving festivities before the major Christmas celebration arrives. As Thanksgiving approaches, we often forget how much we have to be thankful for because we are already looking past the turkey and trimmings and shopping for the perfect present for our kids, practicing for the Christmas program, and making Christmas candy to give to the neighbors. A Thankful Heart

Posted in Christianity at 9:03 pm by Staci Hart Mauney

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. (Psalm 107:1)

About two months ago, I decided to start a gratitude journal. It’s just one sentence a day stating something in my life for which I’m thankful. I didn’t come up with this idea on my own; I had read about in a post on The Happiness Project blog by Gretchen Rubin, and the idea resonated with me. I know that I need a task that doesn’t take much time to complete, but that still turns my heart in thanksgiving toward God, and this journal does that. Now, I have to admit that I don’t always write something down everyday, but getting into this habit has caused me to be more aware of the blessings in my life. When God answers a prayer, I recognize it more quickly than before and give him thanks. I am more conscientious of all the little blessings in life, not just the big ones, and more thankful than ever for them all. Read the rest of this entry »
