“He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world…” (1 John 2:2)

The summer holiday really begins in earnest Memorial Day weekend. In my family, we have an annual cookout – hamburgers and hotdogs with all the trimmings. Many of my friends spend the weekend at the lake, relaxing and enjoying the three day weekend before heading back to work on Tuesday. Still others decide to use this weekend as a springboard to start their summer vacations. But in the midst of all of this, we need to remember the reason for the holiday – those who sacrificed their lives so that we can enjoy these freedoms. Many of my family members served in various branches of the military during Vietnam, including my dad, his brothers Scott and Rod, and my mom’s brother David. Before them, my dad’s grandfather was in the Coast Guard. I’m thankful for the sacrifice of each one who served and is currently serving in the military, and the sacrifice of their families as they wait here at home for their soldiers to return from war. Facing the Storm

“He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed…” (Psalm 107:29)

I jumped in my chair as the tornado siren blared. What time was it? Groggily, I reached for the TV remote to check the time, then noticed the message at the bottom of my TV screen: “Searching for signal.” As my head cleared, I grabbed my phone. It was just 10:00 p.m., so I couldn’t have dozed off for more than a couple of minutes. Was there a tornado headed for town? Or just somewhere in our vicinity? I had no way of knowing since my satellite signal, the only way to receive TV in my rural town, had gone out. But it was close enough that the storm spotters had sounded the alarm, which meant I needed to take shelter, and quickly. Read the rest of this entry »

It feels as if I’ve been away from my blog forever. I know that it’s actually only been a couple of months, but I have been so distracted by the busyness of school, work, and well, life, that I haven’t been able to work on any of my writing projects for a while.
