Developing a Positive Attitude

A few months ago, I received negative feedback from a writer’s contest that I entered. Interestingly, I had already entered those two short stories in another contest and received second place for both, along with valuable feedback that I used to revise them for this contest.

Unfortunately, I let the negative comments from one judge seep into my mind so that I began to doubt my ability to write coherently. I began to experience profound writer’s block – so much so that I had trouble starting short stories, blog posts, even articles for work.

When I entered that contest, I expected to receive more constructive criticism to make my story better. Instead, the criticism felt personal. The judge simply didn’t like anything about my story – and he or she let me know.

After brooding for a while, I realized I shouldn’t take the negative feedback to heart. Instead, I should use it to learn and grow.

Negativity abounds in our world – we see it on the news, hear it in conversations around us, and speak it to ourselves. It seems as if negative information gets the most “likes” on Facebook, but everyone just ignores positive stories.

Paul has some advice for the Philippians about developing a positive attitude that applies to us today: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” (Phil. 4:8) By keeping our minds focused on positive things, we can overcome the negativity that so easily entangles our minds.

When negative thoughts weigh us down, we can turn to the Lord: “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” (Psalm 94:19) He hears our cry, and the Holy Spirit within us will lift the negativity from our souls.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me overcome the negativity that I let into my life so that I can develop a positive attitude toward circumstances around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
