Why Do We Celebrate Easter?

Posted in Christianity at 6:30 pm by Staci Hart Mauney

“On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus…” (Luke 24:1)

In today’s busy world, the true meaning of Easter gets lost, even for Christians. We focus on buying new clothes, hiding Easter eggs for the kids, and preparing a huge meal. I admit that I get caught up in these things, too. I enjoy shopping for a new dress. Easter is a big deal, but not for these reasons.

The true meaning of Easter is found in the following truth: Jesus overcame death. He was humiliated and offered as a sacrifice on the cross. He died and rose from the grave, confirming he was the Son of God.

His resurrection gives us hope – hope for grace to be saved from our sins, and hope for eternal life with him.

As we prepare for Easter this year, consider preparing your heart as well. I’m not asking you to stop hiding Easter eggs or giving away baskets of candy. Instead, make Jesus your focus and let everything else fade to the background. This goes for me as well. As the day approaches, we should remember to place Jesus first each and every day, not just on a holiday.

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. Thank you that you live today. Please help me to focus on you throughout this Easter season and each day beyond. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
