Encouraging Words

Posted in Christianity at 9:28 pm by Staci Hart Mauney

“Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones…” (Prov. 16:24)

For as long as I can remember, I have enjoyed the process of writing. My parents encouraged me in this, along with my aunt, who owned a small-town newspaper in Nevada and let me work with her when our family went to visit. When I was in elementary school, I decided to write a novel. I never completed it, but I did come up with a very catchy title: Just Say No! As you can tell, the message of the day was to stay away from drugs, and I took that message to heart, determined that my peers should as well. Over the years, I have learned that a heavy-handed message is not the best way to get the point across, which is why Jesus used parables when teaching. When writing, I can use my words to hurt others or lift them up, and when I think of all that Jesus has done for me, I only want to use them to encourage others.

Learning from Lilly

“In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind…” (Job 12:10)

Each day when I come in from work, my Yorkshire terrier Lilly is waiting for me. She runs to me, excited, and stands on her hind legs. She extends her front legs to me, waving excitedly in greeting. She is unique, alternately sweet one moment as she sits quietly on my lap, and ornery the next, as she barks incessantly at me because she wants to go outside and play. She is a wonderful companion, reminding me that we are all God’s creatures and placed here for a purpose. Her enthusiasm at seeing me each day reminds me that I should approach my Lord with the same love and eagerness each time I’m in his presence. Her joy is contagious and a gentle invitation to take part in life outside myself. With Lilly, life will never be dull!

This month, I have decided to do something a little different with my blog. Each post will focus on something that brings me joy. According to the title of my blog, “Echoes of Joy,” this site is supposed to be about that topic! So please bear with me this month… Read the rest of this entry »
